Each day, the role of working dogs in the United States and throughout the world becomes more demanding. Therefore, the level of training and certification for handlers and working dogs should constantly evolve and become more progressive and challenging. Police Dogs and other dogs utilized for detection, protection and search and rescue should constantly be driven to be more proficient, adept and capable of effectively handling the tasks presented to them in the field on a daily basis.

Seminars, training and certifications offered through the American Police Dog Tactics Association will be open to any law enforcement, military, search and rescue, or private detection dog handler. The training and certifications will be offered for dog teams that conduct narcotics detection, explosives detection, weapons detection, human remains detection, police patrol, building searches, evidence searches, tracking / trailing as well as Urban or Wilderness search and rescue operations. Special certifications and training are also offered for handlers who operate with SWAT, SRT, ERT or similar teams.

The primary goal of the American Police Dog Tactics Association is to "Raise the Bar" for working dog training and certification. Too often, working dog teams fail in the field, when they are most needed, because of improper training. The APDTA strives to provide realistic training and certification, provided by knowledgeable instructors and evaluators, for those teams who wish for nothing less than to be the best in their field.

The American Police Dog Tactics Association also aims to promote networking among handlers and trainers and to provide a forum for an exchange of information and ideas. We feel that this networking opportunity will allow handlers in all areas to become better at what they do by sharing their experiences with others.

Police Dog Training
The American Police Dog Tactics Association strives to promote effective and realistic training for todays law enforcement canine handlers. The American Police Dog Tactics Association also offers realistic, scenario-based certifications in the areas of detection, patrol, evidence search, tracking/trailing and SWAT applications. These certifications, unlike many others, are designed to test the abilities of not only the canine but the handler as well. Scenario-based certifications allow the handler to determine strengths and deficiencies in training and assist the handler in formulating a plan for improved performance in the field.
Police Dog Certification

Organizations and agencies often establish certifications for one reason; to allow the dog to demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in the areas in which they choose to be certified. Handlers should never go to court and testify that they can "demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency" with their dog when they are asking a jury to convict someone.

Handlers should be able to state that they can demonstrate the Highest Level of proficiency in any situation where they utilize their dog. The mission of the American Police Dog Tactics Association is to ensure that all of its members operate at the highest level of proficiency possible to ensure the reliability of the canine team and the safety of the officers and communities that they serve.
